Fulleren: Der besondere Kohlenstoff in Schungit
Fullerene sind eine Gruppe sphärischer Moleküle, die neben beispielsweise Graphit und Diamant eine weitere Modifikation von Kohlenstoff darstellen. Sie wurden 1985 zum ersten Mal nachweislich künstlich hergestellt, noch bevor man ihr natürliches Vorkommen entdeckte. Die heutige Forschung zu Fullerenen richtet ihr Augenmerk vor allem auf den medizinischen Bereich.
Das bekannteste und am besten erforschte Fulleren ist das C60, das in seiner natürlichen Form in Schungit vorkommt. Dass Fullerene in der Chemie große Aufmerksamkeit genießen, ist unter anderem darauf zurückzuführen, dass Kohlenstoffverbindungen die Grundlage für terrestrisches Leben bilden. Mit der Entdeckung der Fullerene bieten sich neue Betrachtungsmöglichkeiten, was die Zusammensetzung von Lebensformen betrifft.
Welche Bedeutung haben die Fullerene?
Durch den direkten Zusammenhang zum Leben auf der Erde sind Fullerene auch für den medizinischen Bereich interessant. Die Wirkung der bereits erwähnten Anti-Aging-Cremes ist zwar derzeit wissenschaftlich noch nicht erwiesen, allerdings gibt es die Vermutung, dass die orale Aufnahme von gelösten Fullerenen auf den Alterungsprozess bei Ratten einen positiven Einfluss heben kann. Auch der traditionelle Einsatz von Fullerenen in der russischen Volksmedizin (in Form von Schungit) spricht für die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass die Kohlenstoffmoleküle einen Einfluss auf das körperliche Befinden ausüben könnten.
Wo gibt es Fullerene?
Zunächst wurden Fullerene unter Laborbedingungen entdeckt. Heute jedoch weiß man, dass Fullerene ihr Vorkommen auch in natürlicher Umgebung haben, vor allem sind sie ein wichtiger Bestandteil von Schungit. Inzwischen wurden Fullerene außerdem in planetarem Nebel nachgewiesen, was sie zur aktuell größten bekannten Molekülform im extraterrestrischen Weltall macht. Wie sieht ein Fulleren aus?
Bei Fullerenen handelt es sich um Kohlenstoffmoleküle in sphärischer Form. Es sind verschiedene Varianten dieser Moleküle bekannt, von denen die stabilsten mit den Summenformeln C60, C70, C76, C80, C82, C84, C86, C90 und C94 bezeichnet werden. Das kleinste bekannte Fulleren ist das dodekaedische C20. Jedes Fulleren setzt sich aus 12 Fünfecken zusammen, die durch eine je nach Art des Moleküls variable Anzahl von Sechsecken ergänzt wird. Dabei entstehen zum Teil Moleküle, die aufgrund ihrer hohen Symmetrie besonders stabil sind. Bei der Synthese von Fullerenen ist C60 das häufigste Molekül, was seine Erforschung begünstigt. Das im Schungitgestein enthaltene C60-Fulleren ist das am besten untersuchte unter den Fullerenen. Dieser Umstand ist auf seine sehr stabile Form zurückzuführen. Es besteht aus 12 Fünfecken und 20 Sechsecken, die ein abgestumpftes Ikosaeder bilden. Diese Form gehört zu den archimedischen Körpern und zeichnet sich durch eine hohe Symmetrie und die daraus folgende Stabilität aus. Das C60 wird aufgrund seiner Struktur auch Fußballmolekül genannt. Die Zusammensetzung von 12 Fünfecken und 20 Sechsecken sorgt eben auch bei Fußbällen für eine stabile und annähernd runde Form.
Die vielen Namen der Fullerene
Die Fullerene insgesamt haben ihren Namen Richard Buckminster Fuller zu verdanken. Der US-amerikanische Architekt war für die Konstruktion geodätischer Kuppeln bekannt. Die Ähnlichkeit zwischen der Form dieser Kuppeln und der Struktur der Fullerene führte zu der gängigen und heutigen offiziellen Benennung. In Anlehnung an Richard Buckminster Fuller werden die Fullerene auch Buckminster-Fullerene oder im Englischen buckyballs genannt. Die Bezeichnung als Fullerene wurde lange Zeit nicht anerkannt. Erst seit 2002 lässt die IUPAC, die für verbindliche Empfehlungen zur Nomenklatur chemischer Elemente zuständig ist, die Begriffe Fulleran, Fulleren und Fulleroid als Trivialnamen zu. Das vereinfacht die Sprache der Forschung enorm, denn bis dahin lautete die korrekte IUPAC-konforme Bezeichnung für das C60-Fulleren Hentriacontacyclo-triaconten.

Geschichte der Fulleren-Forschung
Die erste wissenschaftliche Publikation, die sich mit den heute bekannten Fullerenmolekülen und ihrer Struktur befasst, stammt von Eiji Osawa, einem japanischen Chemiker. In seiner Arbeit postuliert er die Existenz der später Fullerene genannten Moleküle und berechnet ihre Struktur.
Auf Grundlage dieser 1970 erschienenen Publikation gelang es 1985 dem britisch-US-amerikanischen Forscherteam um Robert F. Curl jr., Sir Harold W. Kroto und Richard E. Smalley Fullerene synthetisch herzustellen. Bei einem Druck von 10 bar wurde unter einer Helium-Atmosphäre eine sich drehende Graphitscheibe mit einem pulsierenden Laser bestrahlt. Das Ergebnis der Bestrahlung war die Entstehung penta- und hexagonaler Strukturen im Kohlenstoff, die sich bei Auslassung des Heliums zu Fullerenen verbanden. Dieser Erfolg gilt als wissenschaftlicher Durchbruch und wurde 1996 mit dem Nobelpreis in Chemie honoriert.
1990 wurde das Verfahren von Curl, Kroto und Smalley durch das Forscherteam von Konstantinos Fostiropoulos, Wolfgang Krätschmer und Donald Huffman weiterentwickelt. Sie nutzten die Verdampfung von Graphit im Lichtbogen, um ein Ruß zu erzeugen, in dem laut Analyse bis zu 15 Prozent Fullerene enthalten sind. Das Lichtbogenverfahren ist damit deutlich effizienter als sein Vorgänger. Nachdem die synthetische Herstellung von Fullerenen möglich war, wurde die Molekülstruktur auch in natürlicher Umgebung gefunden. Unter anderem enthalten Fulgurit- und Schungitgestein diese Kohlenstoffmoleküle.
2010 gelang es, in planetarischem Nebel, Fullerene nachzuweisen. Den Ausschlag gaben Infrarotaufnahmen des Weltraumteleskops Spitzer. Damit sind Fullerene heute die größten bekannten Moleküle im All.
